KIRKUK: Militants took over Iraq's largest Christian town Qaraqosh and surrounding areas on Thursday and sent tens of thousands of panicked residents fleeing towards autonomous Kurdistan, officials and witnesses said.
Islamic State (IS) militants moved in overnight after the withdrawal of Kurdish peshmerga troops, who are stretched thin across several fronts in Iraq, residents said.
“I now know that the towns of Qaraqosh, Tal Kayf, Bartella and Karamlesh have been emptied of their original population and are now under the control of the militants,” Joseph Thomas, the Chaldean archbishop of Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah, told AFP.
Qaraqosh is an entirely Christian town which lies between Mosul, the militants' main hub in Iraq, and Arbil, the Kurdish region's capital. It usually has a population of around 50,000.
“It's a catastrophe, a tragic situation. We call on the UN Security Council to immediately intervene. Tens of thousands of terrified people are being displaced as we speak, it cannot be described,” the archbishop said.
Tal Kayf, the home of a significant Christian community as well as members of the Shabak Shia minority, also emptied overnight.
“Tal Kayf is now in the hands of the Islamic State. They faced no resistance and rolled in just after midnight,” said Boutros Sargon, a resident who fled the town and was reached by phone in Arbil.
“I heard some gunshots last night and when I looked outside, I saw a military convoy from the Islamic State.

A JAMANTA - Manta birostris (Walbaum, 1792)

FAMÍLIA: mobulídeos

LONGEVIDADE: 20 anos

PROFUNDIDADE: 0 - 120m

COMPRIMENTO: 910 cm

PESO: 3.000 kg

 DISTRIBUIÇÃO: práticamente global em àguas temperadas a tropicais, desde California até Nova Zelanda, passando por Japão, Perú, Egipto, Açores. 

       

 

BIOLOGIA: as jamantas ou raias-vampiro pertencem à família dos mobulídeos, que compreende cerca de uma dúzia de espécies. Variam em tamanho desde a manta Australiana (Mobula díabola), que mede cerca de 60 cm transversalmente até ao nosso personagem a Jamanta que é a maior de todas. Apesar do seu enorme tamanho, a jamanta é um peixe geralmente inofensivo que se alimenta de pequeos peixes e crustáceos que arrasta até à sua boca através das barbatanas cefálicas, o par de (chifres) que tem na sua cabeça. As jamantas vivem a uma profundidade média e à superficie e muitas vezes, dão saltos no ar talvez para se libertarem de parasitas ou simplesmente por diversão.

Perferem viver em fundos coralinos ou rochosos onde encontram a sua dieta com mais facilidade, no entanto podem ser encontradas práticamente en toda parte, proprocionando muitas vezes sustos colossais a mergulhadores, que nem nos seus melhores sonhos pensavam encontrar um espetáculo de essa dimensão.

Como peixe desportivo é um verdadeiro colosso só ao alcance de alguns, quando são mais pequenas podem ser capturas a surfcasting e já com maior tamanho ao corrico, são capturas difíceis e muito perigosas, devido ao enorme tamanho que normalmente possuen, especialmente no momento de retirar o anzol para poder libertar tão magnífico oponente. Manusear uma jamanta não é tarefa fácil, e normalmente o pescador perfere cortar a linha quando a têm junto ao barco, para assim evitar qualquer risco.

Esta é uma imagem de 1934, hoje em dia felizmente já não se podem matar estes magnificos animais pois estão protegidos por lei.

FERMENTING OIL . THE MICROBIOLOGY OF SALTY OIL - Microbial Processes in Oil Fields: Culprits, Problems, and Opportunities Noha Youssef, Mostafa S. Elshahed, and Michael J. McInerney

Few studies have focused on isolating fermentative microorganisms from oil
reservoirs with elevated salinities.
 Fermentative halophilic oil reservoir isolates exclusively belong to the genus Haloanaerobium
(Order Haloanaerobiales) such as H. acetethylicum, H. salsuginis, H. congolese, and
H. kushneri (Bhupathiraju et al., 1994, 1999; Ravot et al., 1997).
Most Haloanaerobium spp. are saccharolytic and proteolytic, and produce H2, acetate,
and CO2 as end products of fermentation.
In spite of the general metabolic and phylogenetic diversity of mesophilic
fermentative microorganisms, few isolates that belong to this metabolic
group have been recovered from oil fields. In general, studies on the
isolation of mesophilic fermentative microorganisms from oil fields are
extremely sparse and are far from adequate to identify any global distribution
patterns or link members of any of the identified phylogenetic
groups to a specific ecological role in oil reservoirs.
Fermentative, mesophilic Firmicutes-affiliated isolates include Fusibacter paucivorans
, a new genus belonging to the order Clostridiales that utilizes a limited number
of carbohydrates and was isolated from an offshore oil field in Congo
(Ravot et al., 1999), Dethiosulfovibrio peptidovorans a proteolytic microorganism
that grows on peptones and individual amino acids but not
sugars (Magot et al., 1997b), and ‘‘Acetobacterium romashkovi,’’
 an acetogenic microorganism that is also capable of fermenting sugars and amino
acids (Davydova-Charakhch’yan et al., 1992b). In addition to Firmicutes, a
novel species within the genus Spirochaeta has been identified from oil
reservoirs (Magot et al., 1997a). A novel genus (Petrimonas) within the
phylum Bacteroidetes has recently been isolated from oil

Counter-Clock World is a 1967 science fiction novel by author Philip K. Dick

. It was expanded from his short story Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday,

 first published in the August 1966 edition of Amazing Stories.



The story takes place in a (then-future) fictional 1998, and centers around Anarch Peak,

 a black religious leader who had died in 1971 and is expected to rise soon. 

Sebastian Hermes, an owner of a small Vitarium (a business that digs up the dead and gives them the treatment they need before returning them to society), discovers Peak's resurrection is imminent. 
After accidentally discovering the burial place of Peak, he decides, against the law, to dig up 

the body before the Anarch awakes.
 (As with contemporary controversies about brain death, it seems not to be judged morally 

significant if a heartbeat can be heard, but it is illegal to dig anyone up before they start talking, 

which suggests resumed brain function is a marker of "old-birth.")

Various groups are interested in controlling the affairs of the 'old-born', such as the Vitaria (technically, a person resurrected is in the legal custody of their Vitarium until claimed by family members) and the Library, an organization dedicated to erasing books which have passed beyond the initial date at which they were written.

Religious institutions are also interested in 'old-birth', particularly in the resurrection of Anarch Peak in the case of the Udites (an African-American religion) and The Rome Syndicate (the highest authority in Caucasian matters, as well as the owner of numerous religious artifacts and other items, like a syringe that can stop the Hobart  Phase for short periods of time). These factions then argue over the ownership of Anarch Peak after his resurrection. When the Library kidnaps Anarch Peak, both factions send Sebastian Hermes to recover him. In the end Peak is killed and there may be an interracial war as a consequence of Peak's permanent death.

The Hobart Phase

The Hobart Phase is the new order of life where people rise from the dead and are rejuvenated. Time reversal apparently began in 1986. Other than aging, Hobart Phase resurrection has changed nutritional and excretion processes and associated social taboos. People do not eat, but instead consume "Sogum" (hinted to be reverse Defecation) and later "plop" out food, which is done in private, due to its 'shameful' nature. As for smoking, cigarettes are no longer smoked, but the smoke instead blown back into them, making them grow back to normal size (this also clears and freshens the air). "Goodbye" and "hello" have reversed their order within standard greetings. It is stated that Mars colonists do not have the Hobart Phase on their world, and it is limited to Earth, and presumably its lunar colonies as well.

Divided USA

As hinted in the book, the United States of A has been partitioned into eastern and western segments.Hawaii and AlaskA have also seceded from the WUS and FNM, but this is only mentioned in passing. In the WUS (Western United States), CaliforniA is predominantly white, while the eastern "Free Negro Municipality" (FNM) is inhabited by African Americans. The fictitious religion of Uditi is the national religion of the East. Uditi is an offshoot of Christianity with apparent influences from Roman Catholicism and the Rastafari movement, and is centered around "the udi", an experience of a group mind.

Inhabitants of the WUS view the religion with suspicion, and it is hinted that their media demonizes its adherents. 

Library-sanctioned murders and civil unrest are claimed to be the works of religious fanatics. FNM currency is claimed to be worthless, as is WUS currency (stated earlier in the book), but its citizens ignore this due to patriotism.

Heat Exchange One distinctive feature of the Lamnid sharks is that are able to elevate their body temperature above that of the ambient water. Through a counter-current heat exchange system, the temperature in the stomach, brain, eye and swimming muscles can be up to 13 °C higher than its surroundings with its stomach remaining at about 25°C. The white shark, along with six other mackerel shark species, is able to elevate parts of its body above that of the ambient water temperature, a process named regional endothermy. Through a counter-current heat exchange system, the temperature in the stomach, brain, eye and swimming muscles can be up to 13 °C higher than its surroundings (Goldman, 1997) with its stomach remaining at about 25°C (Roesch, 2001).  There is a significant positive correlation between muscle temperature and ambient water temperature but it appears that stomach temperature is the best indicator of core body temperature since it varies only slightly between both days and amongst individuals (Goldman, 1997). This is accomplished by re-directing blood from enlarged arteries in the flanks inward through a dense network of small arteries and veins called the rete mirable. Through muscle contraction and metabolic processes, blood travelling to the heart in the veins in heated and this heat is transferred to the blood in the arteries as the blood vessels pass each other and cycled back to the muscles and visceral organs (Martin 2001). There are three sets of retia in the white shark, one in the swimming muscles, one in the anterior viscera and the final set surrounding the brain. Being warm-bodied can be extremely advantageous as a 10°C rise in body temperature can increase the speed of muscle contraction three-fold. This will allow increased power and more sustained and accelerated swimming speed, vital when pursuing prey or fleeing from predators (Roesch, 2001). It would also allow penetration into colder and deeper waters than otherwise possible whilst maintaining a high temperature in the brain in order to function effectively. If they did not possess this mechanism, they would be unable to actively search for and prey upon pinnipeds in the cool waters they inhabit (Goldman, 1997).  Increased temperatures in the viscera will result in an increase in the digestion and absorption of large amounts of blubber thereby preventing the defecation of undigested material (Goldman, 1997).  Finally, since the visceral retia also warm the uterus, the development of young will also be enhanced. However, the costs of this endothermy are that a warm-bodied shark will need to ingest 10 times more food than its cold-bodied counterpart. This results in the requirement for energy-rich, large prey, most often found in the cooler temperate oceans of the world. Although the white shark is known to visit tropical waters, it is primarily a temperate water inhabitant to enable the exploitation of these productively rich waters. By extending their range into colder waters, the mackerel sharks are able to avoid competition for food from their cold-bodied cousins.

It is interesting to note how this morbid accumulation of energy in belligerence and its failure to find vent in other directions became more and more evident in the physiognomy of the world as the twentieth century progressed. 

The gatherings of mankind became blotched with uniforms. The Great War greatly intensified the military element in the street population, not only in Europe but America. 

Various corps of feminine auxiliaries were enrolled during that time and paraded the world thereafter in appetising soldierly outfits. In the United States, except at Washington, or when there was a parade of civil war veterans, a soldier in uniform had been hitherto the rarest of birds. 

He would have felt strange and uncomfortable. 

He would have offended the susceptibilities of a consciously liberated people. The Great War changed all that. When Germany was disarmed after the war, a Nazi movement and a Reichsbanner movement supplied the needed colour until a German's freedom to get into properly recognized livery was restored. 

The pattern of half-military, half-civilian organizations in uniform had already been spread about the world between the South African War (1899-1901) and the Great War, by the Boy Scout movement.

Of the Nazi movement, the Italian Fascisti and the Polish Brotherhood at least there will be more to tell later. The black and brown shirts may be cited here as instances of the visible breaking-down of the boundaries between military and civil life that went on during and after the World War.

Hitherto war had been a marginal business, fought upon "fronts", and the ordinary citizen had lived in comparative security behind the front, but the bombing, gas-diffusing aeroplane, and later the long-range air torpedo, changed all that. 

The extended use of propaganda as a weapon, and the increasing danger of social mutiny under war stress, had also its share in making the entire surface of a belligerent country a war area and abolishing any vestiges of civil liberty, first during actual warfare and then in view of warfare. 

The desirability of getting everyone under orders, under oath, and subject to prompt disciplinary measures, became more and more manifest to governments.

So within a century the appearance of the human crowd changed over from a varied assembly of incoordinated free individuals to a medley of uniforms. Everybody's dress at last indicated function, obligation and preparedness. 

The militarization of the European multitude reached a maximum during the Polish wars. 

About 1942 gas masks, either actually worn or hanging from the neck, were common for a time, and so, too, were the small sheath-knives which were to be used in disposing of fallen aviators who might still be alive. 

Patella metal hats and metal epaulettes to protect the head and body against a rain of poisoned needles also appeared. 

Some civilians became far more formidable-looking than any soldiers.
